It seems that what people think depends on their relationship with Matt. People who knew him and who were close to him, such as Romaine and Mr. Peacock, spoke highly of Matt and made him seem like a great individual. However, other people who did not necessarily know Matt seemed to only be concerned with the image of the town and the fact that this whole tragedy is now what defines Laramie.

It’s interesting – there seems to be a difference between people who can personally relate to the victim and people who feel victimized by how the town is represented in the media.
